Playlist For My Love
A Day in the Life of Love With Your Favorite Color:
Well, if I say RUFUS, and the first thing that comes to your mind is the naked mole rat from Kim Possible, bruh, you’re entirely too young for me!
Honey, I’m talking rhythm and funk, Everlasting Love, Tell Me Something Good, Do You Love What You Feel, Rufus!
I grew up listening to soul music, 60’s, 70’s, (mostly Motown) Hip Hop, and Jazz. Our 5 CD 300 watt stereo was kept in the dining room, where most of our fellowship took place; meals, family meetings, homework, etc. I used to call our stereo the pet chameleon because it took on the many tones of my mom’s music moods.
Rufus and Chaka Khan was always in heavy rotation in our castle. Of all the things my mom played, Chaka's voice and delivery made me feel the hardest. I remember feeling so inspired and so free! I could not get enough of her! We had family dance parties, which of course explains why I'm so carefree dancing (shaking and gyrating uncontrollably), and singing/screaming out loud like nobody's watching (even if there's dozens). I've been carrying on since childhood, no lie.
As early as six years old, I’d be running through the house shouting “I’m Every Woman” at my brothers to piss them off. I used to bawl like a baby (and still do) when I hear “Through The Fire”. It makes me think of my parents. No matter where I am, I’ll be excusing myself.
Chaka's music was my window into womanhood, and one of the reasons why I took my time growing up. She high key was putting me on life, love, intimacy, and how to groove funky. I identified with her messages before I even reached double digits, so I knew what kind of love I wanted to give the world when I became of age.
And honey, now that I’m grown af, I relate a lot more to Auntie Chaka's music.
It's molded my role in romantic relationships something fierce. My ex-boyfriends were cognizant of my immense love for Chaka, but didn't have an idea what to do with me because I knew at six years old I wanted to be every woman.
At this point in my life, I'm a fucking riot, but my heart is still pure.
To Be Loved By Duchie:
I'm a fan of your thought process. Your heart is handsome. I feel your warm spirit at a distance, your giving is generous, the speech that flows from your lips is enticing, your Inner-G is delicious, your godliness and individuality is freedom to me...
I love incredibly hard. But sparingly.
So even if you can't attest to me being The Experience You'll Never Forget first, you can at least imagine (and covet) what A Day In The Life of Love With Your Favorite Color is like. And the icing on the Purple velvet cake, I get to paint the picture with the voice of my childhood Soulmodel, Chaka Khan.
But if you are my favorite, like how I'm your favorite, press play and reminisce.
