No Commission - London, UK Pics Never Posted
December 9, 2016:
I've been Stopping, Dropping,
Shutting Em Down & Opening Up Shop
since I was riding my bike with training wheels and living on 15th Street in Logan Valley. That was just normal behavior for a lil' Philly Jawn. Crossing paths with Swizz Beatz at No Commission was a bit of a moment for me. Sure he's produced some of my favorite songs on the planet from "Ruff Ryderz Anthem", to "Best of Me" - Mya, "Check On It" - Beyonce, and "Bring Em Out" - T.I.
But I was more ecstatic about witnessing first hand the way he combined his passions of music and contemporary art. I was there to take notes, not to party.
I was overseas on a business trip (NOT vacation), but the Universe showed me throughout the course of the evening that I was deserving of a good time, free rum, and stimulating art talk!
Usually Duchie The Shooter is on the other side of the lens, so I never ask celebrities for selfies. Delighted that Mr. Dean offered. Perhaps it was all that Purple. 😈
*side bar, I went and ordered like 5 of those leotards!* they're so cozy!
I also met Legendary Damon for the first time. I remember walking into the exhibit area, and being greeted with so many Purple compliments. He couldn't get enough of my Prince Ankh :) I told him it was custom from a jeweler in St. Louis, and shared the significance of it's creation. We continued to talk about fashion, being from the east coast, visiting London, etc. When I got back to the states I attended some of his events, and let me tell you that man throws the shit out of a party! But I'm sure more of that'll come in another Pics I Never Posted entry.
Oh, the beautiful Emeli Sande just minutes after she gracefully slaughtered her set. What I love the most about her is that she's fucking gorgeous, but she also has a really sweet spirit. You might be familiar with her song "Next To Me" from her debut album Our Version Of Events. If not, you're asleep!
Then Kay Davis. She's such a vibrant and creative artist from the U.K. whose work I discovered months before crossing the pond. Someone sent me a screenshot of her hand painted Purple Doc Martens while I was still in LA. This night, I recognized those boots before I recognized her, so when I sparked conversation about them she remembered the Purple ass DM I sent her on Instagram about her shoes. It was definitely a "omg girl hayyy" #blackgirlmagic moment.
I prefer to be present and in the moment absent from technology and distractions. That explains why I have more memories off camera than most people would think. But then again, I don't know what most people think.
It's fair to preserve a little something for my spirit.
No Commission was a once in a lifetime experience, and I'm glad I have it to share with the world.
